Direct Injection (DI) boxes can be real problem-solvers in the studio, but you need to choose the right type for your needs.

It’s very easy to dismiss the use of the DI box, but it plays an important role in recording, at the same time in the studio and (perhaps even more so) in live performance.

There are several different types of DI boxes, but they all serve two main purposes – they function as impedance matching devices and provide grounding, avoiding the hum of grounding many different independent circuits.

Simple Passive DI boxes

The simplest type of DI box involves little more than an impedance matching transformer with a balanced output. This type of device is known as a passive DI box and usually works with line signals, although some are also used for instruments such as guitars and bass players, or even speaker-level signals from power amplifiers. Electrical isolation between the input and the output is provided by a transformer and a switch connected to the input grounded to the output ground. It can be used to ensure good grounding. The presence of a good transformer is critical to the acoustics of the passive DI box, which fully explains the price difference between the models. Traditionally, the balanced output of a DI box is connected to a microphone input instead of a line input. Note that the input is also directly connected to the Thru jack. This allows the DI box to be inserted between the instrument and its amplifier without interfering with normal signal flow, but still allows the engineer to accept a signal from a balanced output for recording purposes.

Electric guitars and basses with a passive adapter system have need a fairly high input impedance to avoid overloading the adapters and thus compromising timbre. Typically, an impedance of 1MΩ or higher is used, although some use a passive transformer DI box with a 100kΩ impedance instrument input along with a guitar and achieve perfectly acceptable results. To achieve high impedance, it is necessary to use an active DI box – part of an electronic impedance-matching circuit.

Active DI box

The active DI box uses a balancing transformer in the output, which provides better electrical isolation than electronically compensating solutions. However, due to the relatively high cost of good transformers, most popular active DI boxes are transformerless.

The active circuit requires power, so the usual solution is to either make the DI box run on standard 48V phantom power or provide a dual solution: switching of battery power as an option for use in those situations where it is unavailable. As a rule, the circuit is designed so that the battery becomes active when the input is connected to the instrument, but is automatically turned off when phantom power is detected in the output XLR. The availability of phantom power is the other reason why DI boxes are usually designed to include mic inputs.

An active DI box gives the designer more flexibility in using different types of input signals. It is not uncommon to find models capable of accepting line-level, high-impedance instrument and speaker signals that are normally input through different jacks. In fact, both active and passive DI boxes are designed to accept a speaker level signal, but due to the high voltages generated at the outputs of the power amplifiers, resistive networks are required to drain the signal to a safe level. For such a reason, speaker level signals should NEVER be plugged into a DI box or other equipment not specifically designed for them, as a result, loss of the device is almost certain. In addition, power amplifiers are designed to operate under constant speaker load conditions, so it is necessary to have a speaker system always on or an equivalent dummy load in the output socket when working with speaker level signals. While a protection amplifier can tolerate no-load conditions, in a tube amplifier the output transformer is almost immediately damaged when switched on without load by a speaker or other spurious load.
